NEW YEAR NEW MOONS

There are 8 different phases that the moon goes through during a lunar cycle. Different parts of the moon appear to be illuminated as it orbits the Earth, due to how the Sun's light is reflecting off of the moon. The moon is the brightest object in Earth's sky except for the Sun. Sometimes the Moon seems to disappear altogether. These shifts are called moon phases. The eight lunar phases are, in order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. The cycle repeats once a month (every 29.5 days). Early man in Native American cultures relied on careful observation of the natural world to create their moon calendars and understand the cycles of the seasons. Native American naming traditions for the moon phases reflect their deep connection to the natural world and their keen observation of the environment. These names provide valuable insights into their cultural practices, beliefs, and understanding of the cosmos. Different tribes had unique names for the moons, reflecting their specific environments and experiences.

Examples:
Wolf Moon (January): The Algonquian people named the January moon the "Wolf Moon" because wolves were known to howl more during this cold, snowy time.
Snow Moon (February): Many tribes named the February moon after the heavy snowfall, reflecting the colder winter months.
Worm Moon (March): The "Worm Moon" name indicates the thawing of the ground and the reappearance of earthworms, signaling the return of spring.
Pink Moon (April): The "Pink Moon" is named after the early blooming wildflower, signifying the arrival of spring.
Flower Moon (May): The "Flower Moon" celebrates the abundance of flowers blooming in May.
Strawberry Moon (June): The "Strawberry Moon" marks the time when strawberries ripen, hinting at the season's bounty. Buck Moon (July): The "Buck Moon" refers to the time when male deer grow their new antlers, signifying the start of the breeding season.
Sturgeon Moon (August): The "Sturgeon Moon" is named after the large fish that are caught in abundance during this month.
Harvest Moon (September): The "Harvest Moon" marks the time when farmers harvest their crops, providing a critical source of food for the winter.
Hunter's Moon (October): The "Hunter's Moon" signifies the time for hunting and preparing for the winter ahead.
Beaver Moon (November): The "Beaver Moon" marks when beavers are preparing for winter by building their dams.
Cold Moon (December): The "Cold Moon" signifies the arrival of the coldest months of the year, marking the start of winter.
